014 | [Situation] In En. [Eastern] Parish district to the N.W. [North West] of Durisdeer Rigg. A deep Glen through which Kirk Burn flows, the name extends from Durrisdeer Village into Lanarkshire. The word path is applied in the same sense as the word Pass. The old road from Kirkudbright to Edinburgh passed through this glen and is supposed, by such writers as Dr. [Doctor] Simpson, to have been a Roman Road. It does not bear any resemblance to Roman Roads in general, it is very much curved and without any necessity for being otherwise than straight. |
