040 | [Situation] On Boundary between Dumfriesshire and Kirkcudbrightshire at point where Dunscore, Glencairn and Balmaclellan meet. A large sheet of water situated in the middle of a barren plain surrounded with hills, in which two counties and three parishes meet. It is about 3 miles in circumference and measures about 5 fathoms in depth, the water wherein is remarkable for its black appearance. In it is an Islet bearing the remains of a stronghold.- This loch is admitted by antiquarians to be loch-c[ure] mentioned by Camden, and which he erroneously supposed to be the source of the Nith & which he states was the site of a Selgovae Town. |
