039; 040; 041; 047; 048; 049 | [Situation] At the S.W. [South West] extremity of the Co. [County] of Dumfries. The Name of this Parish is Gaelic, compounded of "Dun - a fortified house" and "Scor or Sgor a sharp rock, - more freely by Some interpreted, "The " Strength or Fortlet on the projecting rock." - Tradition has not however assigned a locality to answer this description, neither can any trace be found to point out the Site of the original designation of this Parish. There is no detached portion of Dunscore within the boundaries of any other Parish, neither is there within its limits a part of another Parish.The Parish of Dunscore, situate on the Western border of Nithsdale, - is bounded on the North by the Parishes of Glencairn and Keir, on the East by the River Nith dividing it from Kirkmahoe and Holywood, on the South by Holywood and on the West by the loch and water of Urr and the Parish of Kirkpatrick-Durham in Kirkcudbrightshire Stretching from West to East, -compressed almost to bisection at the middle, - this Parish is in extreme length 11¾ miles, in breadth very irregular, varying from a ¼ of a mile or less to 3¾ miles, Consequently the Superficial Area can only be about 23½ to 23¾ miles, or roughly computed may be about 15,150 Imperial Acres, of which little more than 5,500. Acres are Capable of profitable Cultivation. - There are about 550 Acres of natural wood and plantation. The land notwithstanding its disadvantages is much divided, there being about 50 proprietors. - The Average rent of land is about £1.4.0. - The Average Amount of raw produce Annually raised in the Parish may be valued at £16,500, - like most of the other Parishes in this County husbandry has made great Advances of late years, And substantial Farm-houses and steadings have everywhere replaced the old-thatched and inconvenient buildings. - The land is in general well enclosed and subdivided. - the prevailing fence being the dry stone dike.
