055 | [Situation] On the E. [East] side of the high street nearly opposite the End of bank St. The site of the Old buildings which at present are occupied by a large range of Shops .- When these buildings were taken down is beyond the memory of the present generation .- They however appear to have been taken down about the period of the reformation and a prison or tolbooth built on the Site.- Afterwards this Tolbooth was taken down And Another was built near this place but Northward, which was called the new Tolbooth.- On the site of the Old one A Council Chamber was built, which after undergoing alterations And repairs is still standing And used as Cellars belonging to the houses upon this Site, The Cellars Are Arched As in the Case of old vaults.- Adjoining the Deanery was the little Chapel called St. Thomas'.- The above information was got from John McCormack and george Dunbar. -In Chalmers Caledonia Vol III Page 115 is the following Notice " William the Lion granted to the Monks of Kelso the Church of Dumfries , with 5 Acres of land which belonged to it, And the Chapel of st. Thomas in the town with the loft Appertaining to it. - The Grants of william the Lion were confirmed by Walter the Bishop of Glasgow " |
