An elegant And Spacious Bridge over the Nith, Connecting the Burgh of Dumfries with Maxwelltown. - It is built of red Sandstone , has five Arches And was Constructed in 1794. The County of Dumfries, the Burgh of Dumfries and Kirkcudbrightshire each Contributed £1000 towards the erection of this Bridge £1500, was obtained by Subscription And Government furnished the deficiency. There is a toll at present collected upon it, much complained of by importers of Agricultural produce. |

The original Bridge Consisting of 13 Arches was erected in the middle of the 13th. Century At the Expense of Lady Dervegild or Devorgilla daughter of Allan Lord of Galloway, for the more Special Accommodation And maintenance of the Grey Friars (See Port of the Bridge. It was Considered in the 14th. Century - next to that of London,- the best Bridge in the 2 Kingdoms.- It is now used merely by foot passengers being Approached by a flight of steps on the East side. it is not paved, having only A rough Causeway on its Surface. |
