[South West] Corner of the County of Dumfries The name of this Parish was originally written Dunfres, derived , As is Supposed from the Gaelic Dun - a Mount, and Phraes brushwood or furze,- Construed "A rising "ground Covered with Furze."- The derivative is Considered appropriate from the fact, that the Soil is of that light Sandy nature, which, during the forest period of Scotland was unlikely to bear indigenous trees of a size larger than Copsewood and which in its uncultivated State Still abounds with whins and brushwood.- There is no detached portion of Dumfries Parish situate within the Boundaries of another Parish, - nor a detached part of any Parish within Dumfries Parish Boundary. The Parish of Dumfries lying in the South of the district called Nithsdale And S.W. Corner of the County of Dumfries is bounded on the N.W. [North West] by the Parish of Kirkmahoe, on the N.E. [North East] by that of Tinwald, on the East by Torthorwald, on the South by Carlaverock And on the W. [West] by the River Nith which divides it from Kirkcudbrightshire and Holywood parish. - It is about 8 miles in extreme length, in Average breadth about 2½ Miles, - According to Statistics the Area is Computed at about 9,280 acres by other Authorities at 15 Square Miles which would give 9,600 Impl. [Imperial] Acres.- The Soil varies; As in N. [North] and N.W. [North West] Sections it is a reddish earth upon a freestone bottom, in the S.W. [South West] it is a Strong clay And in flat lands a Clay upon gravel. The entire [continued on next page] |
