044 ; 053 | A parish in the district of Garioch, Aberdeenshire, bounded on the north by Insch, on the east by Oyne, on the south by Keig, and on the west by Leslie parish. The principal stream in the parish is the Gaudie which cuts it into two unequal parts; the southern portion being the western extension of the Bein-na-chie range. The northern portion is nearly all arable and in a state of fair cultivation. The principal village is Auchleven, containing an Inn, Post Office and Merchant's Shop, but the Established church and School are in the small village of Kirkton. Its existing antiquities are very few, the only ones of any note being a small artificial looking hillock called the Castle Hill, and the old Castle of Licklyhead. Flint arrowheads, Stone axes, Stones Cists, Urns, and other remains of antiquity have been found in considerable numbers, and the sites of a few Stone Circles can still be pointed out. The principal proprietors in the parish are Henry Lumsden Esqr., Pitcaple Castle, Col. [Colonel] Leith Hay, Leith Hall, and Theodore Gordon Esqr., none of them being resident. Note. There is no portion of this parish detached, nor portion, or portions, of any other parish enclosed within the boundary of this parish. |
