023 | Harbours. There are two harbours the North & South. The North Harbour was formerly called Port Hendry and the South Harbour the Sackit-hive. The basin of the South Harbour contains 5 acres, its depth is 14 ft at high water. Spring tides; the bottom is nearly level; there being only 3 feet difference between the Channel and the upper part of the harbour. The basin originally contained only half an acre; it was secured by a small quay to the South, and the vessels lay in a Sandy bight under shelter of it. About 80 years ago during a violent gale a herring buss that was then in the harbour having broke loose from her moorings was driven upon the rocks where the West Quay is now erected and quarried them up as she went along; this first gave rise to the idea of deepening the harbour which was immediately commenced and the West pier soon after built, about this time the mound was raised, which connects the Keith-inch with the town.
