William Thompson. Inspector of Poor. Chapelbrae. Auchmull Mr. Stewart. Registrar Parish of Newhills Mr. Robert Dawson Factor. Roseville Auchmull |
065 | This name applies to a cavern situated on the north side of the Hill of Elrick. It is about six feet wide at the mouth, & appears to have been cut through the solid rock for a considerable distance, although at the present time it is filled up with clay & stones a few feet from the entrance. "It is supposed by the vulgar to have penetrated for miles underground, and is celebrated in their legends as the residence of a noted robber and his gang. He was slain by an ancestor of the Johnstons of Caskieben; and the weapon employed upon that occasion still forms part of the Arms belonging to that family" (See Old Statistical Account.) Some believe it to have been an excavation made for mining purposes. |

Ordnance Survey - Aberdeen county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Aberdeen, which is in the north east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
