012 | Applies to an arable field and plantation a little north of Millfield. The spot was at one time, a Moss, and is the place referred to in the Old Stat. [Statistical] Account as "Findlay's Mire", but the Spots where the spear heads there referred to were found, have long Since being lost Sight of. "The wild heath Seems to wave of the grave of many a long forgotten hero, on these fields where contending barons tried the keenness of their Swords. Some of the Covenanters cut off by the Ogilvies, have given a name ("Findlays Mire") to these spots where they fell, and Some heads of spears, of a yellow Colour and of the form most approved when the Scottish spear was almost as tremendous a weapon as the English bow, were lately found in an exhausted moss, and are now in the possession of Mr Cumine of Auchry" Old Statistical Account |
