082 | The site of what was once a large Feudal Fortress and the seat of the "Durwards", once a great family in Cromar; not the slightest vestige of it now remains, and its date of erection is lost, but the Durward family first became important in Malcolm the 3rds reign, 1057. Fullartons Gazetteer notices that several old Scottish Silver Coins have been found here, but where found cannot be pointed out. Upon a rocky eminence in the vicinity of the church may still be seen the remains of the Castle of Coull. It appears to have been a fortification of considerable extent and great strength, of square form, with large hexagonal towers at its angles. The fosse may still be distinctly seen. It was the seat of the Durwards, - a family once in great influence in this district. It is a common saying still, that the church bell of Coull rings of its own accord when a Durward dies. Ordnance Survey - Aberdeen county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Aberdeen, which is in the north east of Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
