Poser 269 – Privy Council records, 1587
This poser is the second part of three taken from the miscellaneous volumes of the Privy Council records, which are mainly concerned with the enforcement of law and order, particularly in the Highlands, Islands and Borders, 1587 (Crown copyright, National Records of Scotland, PC8/1, page 5).
As with the previous poser 268, the passage is part of the roll of the landholders of the borders and highlands. Again it mentions the term marche which referred to the border between England and Scotland. The term west marche used in the passage corresponded roughly to the area of today's Dumfries and Galloway.
The handwriting is regular and typical for 16th century. Watch out for phonetic spellings, the way the clerk formed his letters x and w as well as ligatures. Also, note the different ways of forming the letter r.
