Poser 268 – Privy Council records, 1587
This poser is the first part of three taken from the Privy Council records, 1587 (Crown copyright, National Records of Scotland, PC8/1, page 5).
The passage is part of the roll of the landholders of the borders and Highlands. It mentions the term marche. If used in the singular the term refers to the border between England and Scotland. The term middill marche described roughly the area of Roxburghshire and parts of Berwickshire.
The handwriting is regular and typical for 16th century. Note the three different ways of forming the letter r as for example in lines 2 an 4
in the word Erll and in line 14
in the word Drumlangrig. Also, watch out for phonetic spellings, the way the clerk formed his letters h, a and e as well as ligatures.
