Help at hand

Have help at hand

If you are going to be reading Scottish documents regularly it is important to know where to find help in the form of dictionaries, glossaries, word lists etc and to have some key research tools to hand. Sometimes a troublesome word in a document will require half an hour's thumbing through a Scots dictionary, a glossary of legal terms, a gazetteer, and maybe even an older English dictionary. For advice on these go to the Bibliography page.

If you are reading in an archive or library they may have suitable reference works to hand but it is probably safer not to assume so. You should consider buying your own Scots Dictionary and carrying it with you. Other works may be too bulky, but it is worth acquiring other dictionaries, gazetteers and so on, to have at home, where you can consult them at your leisure.
