Lerwick presbytery

A Church of Scotland presbytery. Previously known as Shetland or Scalloway, it was in the synod of Shetland. It was annexed to Sutherland and Caithness in 1646, but from 1648 to 1704 it was under the direct authority of the General Assembly. It was then returned to Sutherland and Caithness until 1715, when it returned to the General Assembly until the erection of the synod of Shetland in 1830. In 1830 the presbytery of Burravoe was erected and the parishes of Fetlar and North Yell, Mid Yell, South Yell, Unst, Delting, Laxavoe, Nesting and Northmaven were transferred to Burravoe. In 1848 the parishes of Sandsting and Walls were transferred to the presbytery of Olnafirth, as were the parishes of Delting, Nesting and Northmaven from the presbytery of Burravoe.
