Holy Island

An island in the Firth of Clyde, to the east of Arran, in the parish of Kilbride and the county of Bute. From 1830 the name Holy island gained currency to differentiate it from the village of Lamlash on the island of Arran. It was sometimes known as Holy Isle and formerly known as Eilean Molaise, or its corruption, Lamlash. Not to be confused with the Holy Isles, another name for the Garvellachs, to the north of Jura in the county of Argyll.
