The north-east portion of this house is an ancient tower house, (shaded on Trace) which upon the authority of the Pr. [Proprietor] was for a time occupied by some of Oliver Cromwell's troops. The walls of the old house are of extraordinary thickness, measuring in some parts about 6 & 7 feet, & the roof of the kitchen or lower story is arched; the upper stories are gained by a spiral stone stair. Every part of the building shows it to be of considerable age, but of what exact date the Pr. [Proprietor] does not know. The modern additions to the dwelling of Auchinvole have been constructed in the style of the old tower house, (over [continued on page 3A] |
