018 | This is the remains of an ancient "Roman Catholic Chapel", whether this Chapel was built and endowed by St. Magnus, or whether it was dedicated to him afterwards is not Known; however it bears his name. *It is probable that this Chapel was connected with an hospital which was named after him, and built by him - "where the sick heard sermons". The name of the place in which the chapel stood "Spittal" bears close affinity with hospital. The property of Sir P.M. Thriepland Bart. [Baronet] of Fingask. |
| GRAVE YARD [St Magnus's Chapel] | 018 | This grave-yard, which surrounds St Magnus' Chapel at Spittal, is enclosed by an old wall, which has Sunk so low that the cattle can step over it with ease. The in side of the chapel and all round it, is covered with grave stones, all of which are lying without any inscriptions. Interments, though few, still take place in it. [initialled] GR. |
