017 | This Battle was fought in 1594 between the Clans Gunn and McIvers. The latter is said to have been encamped on an eminence near Pulleyhour, where the remains of a circular embankment is still to be seen and is pointed out as - Site of Camp, Another of the same is said to have stood about a quarter of a mile to the east, the site of which has been shown to me, by R. McLeod Pulleyhour, See descriptive remarks on Camp No 2. The McIvers were Stationed at Camp No 1 when a division of the Gunns advanced to the Pulleyhour Ford, and Sent there Sharp Shooters to intercept them, the Gunns however caused them to retreat to the summit of the hill, where, when they were engaged, hand to hand, a Second division of the Clan Gunn, who forded the river below Longside, came unobserved to the rear of their enemy, who expected no danger from that quarter. The McIvers were nearly all killed, with their chief; who fell among the first. This Battle field was pointed out to [continued on page 146] |
