| Site of ORMELIE CASTLE | Continued [from page 113] at Kirkwall. (It is supposed to have existed before the 13th Century." Page 31. "The foundation of the Castle of Thurso, was dug up a few years ago, and its well, about 20 feel deep, and strongly built, - circular from the bottom, - was cleared out. The remains of the ruins were deeply covered with sod, amongst which, a considerable number of hewn Stones were found, the rest having been carried away Several ages ago." The well has been filled in many Years ago, therefore - there is nothing of it to be seen but it is said to have been Some where about the middle of the Castle. The name "green" is Supposed to have been derived from the appearance of the ruin, which is said to have looked Something like the Tullochs, or remains of the Pictish houses which are so numerous throughout the County. Ormly is Said to have been the old and proper name of the Castle, and, that Lord Ormly, who is also the Earl of Bridalbane, took his title from this place. |

The Sinclairs of
Murkle are said to have
been the last occupants
of "Ormly Castle", and
that a family of the
Dunbeath Sinclairs
occupied it previous
to them. It appears to
have been destroyed about
the beginning of the
