203.04 | A Circular stone dyke and a vallum of earth enclosing 7 standing stones, 6 of which are part of a circle although believed by the inhabitants to be a Druidical circle or Temple (it has no resemblance to that remarkable entire circle near Wigton, the stones in this instance are 22 in number and placed at equal distance on the valum or dike, with a large one in the centre.) The Rev. [Reverend] Alexander McBride Port Bannatyne, who is well acquainted with a number of the antiquities, and the geology of the island, is of the opinion that this is nothing more than a tumulus (there is no mound), & he also says that the late Dr. [Doctor] Scoular and some more of the eminent Antiquarians who have lately visited this island, are of the same opinion. "At St. Calmag's near Ettrick, there is a Druid's temple in considerable preservation & there are faint traces of several other such temples in various parts of the parish." New Stat Acct. There are 2 more of the same dimensions, but without stones, one on the farm of Dunalunt and the other on Nether Ardroscadale, they consist of a circular valum of earth, see traces and N.
