This parish is situated in the North-end of the Island of Bute & was disjoined from Rothesay Parish in 1844 when it was erected into a separate Civil and Ecclesiastical Parish. It is bounded on the North, North-East and North-West by the Kyles of Bute, which separates it from the districts of Cowal & Kerry in Argyllshire; on the East & South-East by the Firth of Clyde; on the South by the Parish of Kingarth and on the West by the sea which separates it from the Island of Arran and the District of Kintyre. The shore is in general shelving rock (slate) & gravel & is neither bold nor flat. The principal bays are Kames on the East, Ettrick on [continued on page 2] |
