Island of Arran -- Ph [Parish] of Kilbride

"It is a place of much antiquity, & seems to
have been the fort held by the English under
Sir John Hastings in 1306, when it was surprised by the
partisans of Robert Bruce & the garrison put to the Sword.
It was demolished in 1456 by the Earl of Ross in
the reign of James II, is said to have been Rebuilt
by James V & to have been garrisoned in the time
of Cromwell's usurpation". Pennant's Tour of 1772
