216.14 | A large modern Village, Situated on a beautiful Bay at the South end of Meikle or Great Cumbrae, much frequented in Summer by Sea bathers. The houses are very neat and well built, and chiefly extend along the Shore. There are numerous handsome villas on a rising ground overlooking the village, adding much to its general appearance. There is Steam boat Communication with Glasgow daily in winter and frequently in the summer months; there is no fair nor market, and the only manufacture is weaving for the Glasgow Manufacturers: it Contains a good pier and a harbour for Small vessels, a College and 5 Churches and Chapels, with a Post Office. The Marquis of Bute is the principal proprietor |
