The Quarry from which it was taken is still successfully wrought at Dryburgh, and no stone in the Island seems more perfectly adapted for the purposes of architecture, as it hardens by age, and is not to be corroded or decomposed by the weather, so that it might be even used for the cutting of Bas reliefs - and statues -
It was purchased in 1786 by the Earl of Buchan from the heirs of Colonel Tod, who bought it from Haliburton of Mertoun a very old Cadet of the chief family of Holyburtons of Piteur and of Holyburton of Holyburton -"
