It consisted of a mound of rich earth about 30 feet high and was Surrounded at the base with two rows of huge boulders some of Which are still in their original position. A Stone cist containing ashes, and black mould of a bituminous nature, and a golden Stirrup were found in it, Some years ago by one of the farmers. It has been nearly all defaced, and is now almost level with the Surrounding land. |
| AN URN CONTAINING ASHES AND A GOLD ORNAMENT FOUND HERE A.D. 1794 [Green Cairn] | 007.03 | "At Upper Dallachie near the Roman Station, there remained inviolate, till 1794, a sepulchral tumulus, which is popularly called the Green Cairn; and which contained the ashes of some Roman Chief; about two feet from the surface, was found, when it was broken up, an urn of rude workmanship, which, when the ashes of the dead were shaken out, disclosed a piece of polished gold, like the handle of a vase, three inches in diameter, and more than one eighth of an inch thick. It appeared to have been the handle of a vase. As the Society of Antiquairies at Edinburgh declined to purchase this curiosity, the finder sold it for bullion at the price of thirteen guineas."
