021.03 | The remains of a circle of great blocks of stones irregular and of unequal height It would appear that when entire there was generally an outer and inner circle with a sort of intervening embankment carried round the circles to the East or North East these ditches were turned of to form a sort of Avenue by which the circle was approached. there are now remaining only four upright stones about 6 feet high and about 4 feet thick. And within the stone circle is the alter stone a large stone laying flat considerably to the south of the centre of the circle and is said to be the one where human victims were immolated, The Druids are said to have derived thier name from Drus an Oak their religious rites being often celebrated under the shade of that tree. |
