002.09 | A large fishing village on the coast, principally consisting of fishermen's dwellings, fish curing yards, shops, etc, etc. It is divided into three districts, viz. Nether Buckie, Seatown, and Newtown. At the mouth of the Burn of Buckie, which intersects the village, there is a commodious harbour, protected by two massive piers, erected by the Board of Fisheries and Robert Gordon Esq. of Letterfourie in 1855-57. There are four places of worship, viz. a Chapel of Ease attached to the Established Church, a Free Church, Episcopal Chapel, and a Catholic Chapel, three Schools: branch offices of The Union: The City of Glasgow & The North of Scotland Banks. There are 213 large boats and 33 small belonging to Buckie employed in the various fisheries. Nether Buckie on the West side of the Burn of Buckie belongs to Robert Gordon Esq: of Letterfourie, and on the east side of this burn to John Gordon Esq. of Cluny. |
