046 | A stone on the east bank of the River Avon of about 3 cubical feet, and known by this name. " In the year 1575, soon after the establishment of the reformation in Scotland, a priest who had refused to marry the uncle to the niece was seized by the ruffian and his party, laid upon a faggot, bound to a stone, and in this manner burnt to death, the remembrance of the atrocious deed is still preserved in the name of the stone, which to this day is called Clach-ant-shagairt, or the Priest's stone." [Account] The stone alluded to in the foregoing extract was washed away by the great flood of 1829, but as another stone stood within a few yards of it which had defied the fury of the flood, the name was transferred to it, and retains it to this day. |
