036 | 12 Chains N by W [North by West] of Maryport farm house. A small round clump or mound evidently the remains of one of the ancient Cairns on which there had been large flags of Stones dug up, which was placed on edge with a flat cover over them & had in all probability been a burying ground. The most of it has been taken away by cultivation. the remaining part of it is a very prominent object as it is situate on the summit of a sharp conical hill. And takes its name from the small farm on which it Stands being Called Aine which is now let with Cairngarroch. The property of the Earl of Stair. Near to the West Side of this place is a Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Station] called by the Trigl. [Trigonometrical] Party 'Mary Port.' |
