029 | [Situation] In the Southern part of the Parish of Mochrum. A handsome little village on the road from Port William to Wigtown or KirKcowen about 1 1/2 mile from the former & 8 from the latter. Population about [200.] Many of its inhabitants are Crofters of the land surrounding the village and by their Skilful Culture, [have] greatly improved the soil and aspect. In it stands the Parish Church & Manse, the latter with a well decorated garden attached which also adds much to the Scenery of the village. It has also 3 Public houses and a few Grocer shops & Situate a short distance to the West stands the Ph. [Parish] School house, a handsome plain building [with] a Projecting roof (See description of Ph. [Parish] School house). The property [is that] of Sir William Maxwell, Monreith. |
