010 | [Situation] At the west side of Innermessan adjoining the Sea Side A large circular mound Situate on high ground close to the Sea Shore "Its circumference at the base" is 336 feet and from the foundation to the top is 78 feet. It appears to have been Surrounded by a Fosse Such erections may have Several various purposes " The name Moat a Saxon word would seem to indicate that it was a place of judicial assembly . The Fosse would lead us to believe that it had been used as a fortlet or place of defence but whatever other purpose it may have Served no doubt it was used as a place for burning the dead or depositing the Ashes of the dead s in digging through the surface on the top ashes charred wood & fragments of human bones were discovered the ground on which it stands is a steep declivity on the west side on which the sea (apparently) is fast encroaching . Close to this moat stood the old town of Innermessan ( which is the prevalent opinion of the Country people) on which place stood also the ancient town of the Romans "Rerigonium " the words "Site of ancient town" is written by the Examr [Examiner] as the place where the town [continued over] |
