005 | [Situation] On the River Avon, on the Western boundary of the Co. [County] Linlithgow This bridge is situated a Mile W.[West] of the town of Linlithgow on the Falkirk and Glasgow Road, it spans the River Avon W [West] of a small Village of the Same name, it consists of one large & lofty Arch with a span of Sixty feet and is Kept in excellent repair, close to the roadway in the South battlement, and immediately over the Centre of the Arch, is inserted a stone being the date 1626, the year in which the present structure was erected. This bridge and the locality were the scene of a Sanguinary Conflict between the Earls of Angus & Lennox for the possession of the Young King James 5, which ended in the defeat of Lennox. The Customs of this Bridge are let by public roup every three Years. |

Note
Although the date 1626 is inscribed on the bridge it is probable there was a bridge before date. Therefore the date here given may be that of the Rebuilding or extensive repairs of it. Perhaps it may not be unobjectionable to write this name on plans as an antiquity.
