006 | [situation] In the SW [South West] end of the parish of Dalmeny A large and very handsome mansion, Situated on the N.E. [North East] Side of a conspicuous hill in the vicinity of Queensferry, and said to be one of the most eligant Specimens of the Tudor Gothic to be met with in Scotland - it is surrounded by an extensive demesne, thickly wooded - Immediately adjoining the new Mansion, stands the feudal fortress of Dundas Castle, one of the most perfect specimens of the old Scottish Stronghold now existing in the Country. The walls of this fortress bear evidence of being at least 14 feet thick - The kitchen is arched over, so is also the dungon keep. A dark. winding stair leads from the bottom of the Dungon Keep to the old baronial kitchen - originally the Castle consisted only of a single square tower - The whole is in good preservation. In the rear of the Mansion there is a fountain & dial of the most remarkable Structure, and elegance of design erected in 1623. by Sir Walter Dundas. |
