113 | Stands in the centre of the town. It is a spacious and beautiful building, Gothic style of architecture, consisting of a chancel, nave, transepts and central tower. The tower is square about 70 feet high, crowned with an old-fashioned spire 50 feet in height. This edifice was erected in 1223-1245 by Gilbert de Moravia, Bishop of Dornoch from 1223 to 1260. It was burned down in 1570, as also the Bishop's Palace and a Monastery of Trinity Friars (of which no remains now exist) by the Master of Caithness. Dear Sir,
With reference to yours of the 10th (
received only today owing to my absence
from home, I should approve of the second
title Viz "Church formerly Cathedral. A.D
1223" since the building now used as the
Parish Church is the restored Cathedral.
