...cross commemorates an exploit performed by William, Earl of Sutherland about the year 1259 when the Danes and Norwegians made a descent upon the Coast. The gallant thane is said to have singled out and encountered the Danish General, by whom he was disarmed. He then seized the leg of a horse which lay on the ground and dispatched his adversary.
The cross was erected on the spot where he fell.
