Sutherland -- Ph. [Parish] of Dornoch

Astail [Notes]
altered from Astail to Asdale
Astail - Submitted again in Sheet 108 to the Revd. [Reverend] J.M. Joass who now recommends Astail

Although not collected on the ground. I have no
doubt Asdale is the correct form of this name
which is Norse (= hollow or valley) but has been
turned into Gaelic (= dwelling) - a number of
adjoining names depend upon these.
Sig. [Signed] J.C. Macpherson
Cap. R.E. [Captain Royal Engineers] 29 May 1878.

Asdale recommended - reply to Examination office
Remark 10th Sep. [September] 1878.
Sigd [Signed] J.C. Macpherson
Capt. R.E. [Captain Royal Engineers]
