| Caledonian Fort (Continued | 028.05 | [continued from page 85] of the outer side of a ditch appear on the other sides. About the centre of the east side there is a gap or brake in the Fort which appears to have formed the entrance to it. Opposite this, on the west side, there is a gap similar to the one described, but it does not take place directly opposite, being less than the half circle of the Fort. No personal authorities could be found to identify the local name "Meikle Reive" with this antiquity which appears in Accounts &c. of the Parish. The Name "Maiden Castle" has been identified with the other Caledonian Fort - which see (Trace 2 28-9) "Sloughneagh" and the Craigs west of it on the side of the Fells overhang this Fort. It is not a perfect circle - nor has it ever been - the remains being almost entire. |

Ordnance Survey - Stirling county
Ordnance Survey was established in the 18th century to create maps, surveys and associated records for the entirety of Great Britain. These records are arranged by county. This entry has been created to enable searching for Ordnance Survey records for the county of Stirling, which is in central Scotland. The boundaries of the county were altered by the Boundary Commissioners in 1891.
