028.09 | The principal village in the Parish and situate about the centre of Campsie on the line of the T.P. [Turn Pike] Roads from Galsgow & Kilsyth to Kippen & Fintry. Besides the Parish Church in Lennoxtown there is a United P. [Presbyterian] Church, a Roman Catholic Chapel (St. Paul's) and a room where a body of W. [Wesleyan] Methodists worship. There are five schools here - two Subscription, one a R.C. [Roman Catholic] School, (St. Paul's) and an adventure School in the W.M. [Wesleyan Methodist] Chapel, as well as an endowed School in "Crosshill St." called the "Oswald School". The source from which almost the whole of the inhabitants derive their support, is Lennoxmill Printworks. The Terminus of the Campsie Branch Railway is in Lennoxtown. The Streets are regularly lighted from a Gas Works in the village, and most of them bear names. The Inns are the "Commercial", the "Swan" & the "Lennox Arms". There is a Branch Bank of the Royal Bank in "Service St". The name applies from Rowantreefaulds in the south to Geelong & Union Places in the north. (trace 3. 27-12). Lennoxtown is a Post Office town. |
