017.11 | This stone in which the Standard of Scotland was fixed at the battle of Bannockburn is situated on a slight elevation called Brocks Brae, about a quarter of a mile from the village of St Ninians and two miles from Stirling. It was nearly circular and measured 3 feet in diameter, and two in thickness. In the centre was a hole 3 inches wide in which the Staff of the Standard was placed. It is supposed to have been fixed on wheels, so that it might have been shifted to any part of the field if necessary. Portions of it have been carried away by tourists, and the remaining portion is protected by an Iron Grating. |
