023.12 | A large print work erected 1800 for calico printing. It consists of a very extensive block of building, varying from one to four stories and eight, with powerful machinery propelled by steam, owing to the death of the late proprietor, these works have been in disuse since the end of 1857, but having been recently purchased by a Mr. Buchanan of Glasgow, who purposes carrying on the business again as soon as the necessary repairs, in which workmen are now engaged, are completed. These works when in full operation employ from six to seven hundred persons. Another large block of buildings a few chains to east of this is used as a Bleach Work in connection with the Print Work, it existed some years before the Print Work was erected, and is known in the locality by the name of Denovan Bleachfield. |
