012.05 | A colossal statue of Sir Walter Scott mounted on a granite pedestal & bearing the following inscription Viz [videlicet] "Waverly" "Erected in August 1839" "In proud and affectionate rememberance" of "Sir Walter Scott Baronet" "Sheriff of this County" "From 1800 to 1832" "By Yarrow's Stream still let me stray Though none should guide my feeble way Still feel the breeze down Ettrick break Although it chill my withered cheek" And on the west side are the Town Arms and a Scroll inscribed "Reparabit cornua Phaebe" and underneath another scroll with the Scotch muse "Watch Weel". The monument is guarded by a Strong metal railing, and is almost the only ornament in the town, except perh [perhaps] the Town Hall Spire. |
