[Page] 6 Plan 65 12 Trace 5 Parish of Ballantrae

"The ruins of the Castle of Ardstinchar are situated on a rock above the
River Stinchar, a short distance from Ballantrae; and forms a prominent
object to the traveller from the South. The date of its erection is unknown.
It was however, a strong hold of the Kennedies of Bargany, for a
period of 250 years. It consists of several square towers which protected
an embattled wall, enclosing a considerable space; and which appears to have
had also strong defences, particularly on its west or entrance angle."
Patersons Hist. [History] of Ayr.
