On an eminence known as Cairnduff,
situated on the property of Mr. James Neilson
Provan of Peacockbank near Stewarton, there
is a large collection of stones which has
always been looked upon as a sepulchral
monument. The late proprietor Mr. John Deans
having some time ago caused a part of this
Cairn to be opened up, three urns containing
bones and relics were found deposited
in small cells near the original surface of
the ground. One of the Urns, which was
unfortunately broken before it was taken up,
appears to have been about a foot in diameter;
the other two measure about 5½ inches in
diameter and nearly six inches in height.
They appear to have been formed of very coarse
clay, but some taste has been exercised in
