016 | An extensive tract of Sand hills extending along the Coast from Stevenston Burn to the Irvine and Garnock Waters. the hills of Sand are Scattered irregularly throughout the whole of the Waste and are Covered partially with a coarse description of Grass known as "bent" According to the lease of this tract at present in the occupation of the Messrs. Merry and Cunninghame it is styled Misk Knowles and Ardeer Hills, but is not generally known as such by the inhabitants of the neighbourhood. Property of Patrick Warner Esqr. and occupied by Messrs. "The lower south division of the parish is a continued plain,
The Inequalities made by the sand hills, as they call them,
excepted, some of which are above 30 or 40 feet high. The soil
here is pure sand throughout; yet the stratum of clay prevalent
in the higher ground continues under the sand, and has been
once bare, and cultivated nearer the sea than at present"
