030 | A remarkable object situated on a slight eminence on Burnfoot Moor. The Stone is about 4 feet high and broken in several places, There are no distinguishing marks that could lead to the possibility of Knowing the Origin by which it was placed there. Mr. Whyte - factor for Lord Henry Bentinck states that by tradition it is supposed to mark the Site of a battle between the Picts and the Romans - but according to Mr. Brown of "Greenockmains", (See [Description] [Remark], 30.2. T .5) it is supposed to mark the grave of one of the Campbells; Laird of Auchens who was slain in an encounter with some Annandale "Freebooters". |
