025 ; 026 ; 030 ; 031 | "This parish anciently formed part of the extensive parish of Mauchline, and belonged to the Monks of Melrose. It was erected into a separate parish in 1631, and the church built at that period was "styled "The Kirk of the Muir". It is bounded on the N. [north] by Avondale, on the N. E. [north-east] by Lesmahagow and on the E. [east] by Douglas & Crawford John in the County of Lanark, on the S. [south] and W. [West] by Auchinleck, and on the S. W. [south-west] by Sorn.- Its shape is irregular. Extreme length, from E. [east] to W. [west] about 10 Miles, extreme breadth, from N. [North] to S. [south] about 7½ - The antiquities of the parish are few, and not very interesting, and will be found described in some of the following pages - There is no detached portion of this parish in any other, nor any portion of any other parish within this.
