023 ; 024 ; 025 ; 028 ; 029 ; 034 | It is stated in Chalmers' Caledonia that "Mauchlin parish derived its name, from the town, whereat stands the Church, and the town has its name from the Gaelic Maghlin, signifying the plain with the pool; (Llyn) in the British, and Linne , in the Gaelic, signifies a pool, in a running stream." The parish is bounded on the N. [North] by Galston and a detached portion of Riccarton; on the E. [East] by Sorn; on the S. [South] by Auchinleck, and Ochiltree; and on the W. [West] by Stair, Tarbolton, and Craigie. Its extreme length from east to west, is about six miles its average width about three. The Antiguities of the parish are few, and will be found described in the following pages. There is a detached portion of the Parish of Sorn, within this parish but no detached portion of this in any other parish. J.C.G. |
