003 | The ancient church, dedicated to St Columba (the abbot of the Island of Iona) was Situated in the burying grounds, South of Gallowgate St. and was removed at the time of the erection of the present building. the only vestige of the original building now remaining, is a Small piece of the South wall to which is attached an ancient monument (the record on which is quite obliterated by time). the date of its erection is unknown, but can be traced further back than the Battle of Largs, which happened in 1263 - The present building in the burying ground was an aisle added to the original, by Sir Robert Montgomerie in 1636, and is in good preservation and Contains a burial vault and over it a richly Sculptured monument - belonging to the Montgomerie family. This Church was a Rectory the patronage of which belonged to the Lordship of Largs.
