According to the New Statistical Account of Ayr and Bute the name is derived from
St. Winning, a Scottish Saint of the eighth century, to whom the Ancient church of this place
was dedicated." "Whose memory was celebrated on the 21st. January, and on which day
a fair has long been held in Kilwinning." The Antiquities of the Parish are not
many, nor very interesting, And will be found described in the following pages
of this book.
